“I love being an independent woman. I am very proud!”- Abby
This month for our self-advocacy spotlight we will be featuring, Abby. Abby will be talking about independence and interdependence. Interdependence is getting and giving support to others to accomplish goals and daily tasks. Abby shares how both interdependence and independence go hand in hand in her advocacy journey.
Abby loves to have fun in her community and in life. When asked what her favorite spirit animal was, she replied, “A dog, because it is happy, cheerful, and playful like me.” Abby is part of the special Olympics, which includes bowling once a year. She is also involved in horseback riding throughout the year. Abby loves to dance. She attends a pop and jazz class at the Uptown Funk dance group. Creative writing is also a hobby Abby shared she enjoys but doesn’t have much time to do.
Abby receives support from her staff. When asked how she is supported she replied, “I let them know my schedule and let them know I want to do things on my own. I like being independent.” Abby speaks up for her needs and lets people know when she doesn’t need help. Abby was asked what she loves most about being independent. “I love doing things on my own and making the people in my life proud! I love being an independent woman and living on my own. I am very proud!”
Interdependence is also important to Abby. Both Abby and her roommate do chores around the house. Abby lives with a good friend she has known for many years. Abby works at Culvers helping with cleaning the dining room and bringing food out to customers. Her parents help her with paying bills. Abby feels supported by both her staff and family.
Volunteering has also been part of Abby’s journey. She once was able to volunteer for Superbowl 52. Abby was able to direct people inside the stadium and help them find where they needed to go. She worked for twelve hours that day. Abby now continues her amazing advocacy journey with The Arc Minnesota by supporting her peers. “I want to keep expressing and offering support to others with disabilities.”
