This month, for the Self-Advocacy Spotlight, we will be talking about self-expression. Noa will be sharing how she expresses herself as an individual and self-advocate. Self-expression is an action that shows a person’s feelings and self to the world. Examples of self-expression can be how someone dresses, their writing, or playing music.
Noa has been a self-advocate for about seven years. One of her favorite opportunities was three years ago with a program called, “Partners in Policymaking.” Partners in Policymaking is an eight-month program. This leadership program teaches individuals with disabilities how to help create positive changes in policy decisions. Parents of people with disabilities can also join. Noa shared her joy in taking this course. She felt it helped her learn to stand out more and speak up for her wants and needs.
Noa has a passion for writing. She feels it helps her process her feelings of grief, love, and joy. Noa joined “Cow Tipping Press” about eight years ago. Cow Tipping Press teaches writing classes and publishes works for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Noa started as a fellow. A fellow helps the teacher in class with teaching part of the lessons to the students. Noa continues her writings outside of class as well. She enjoys writing about her relationships and memories with friends and family. She also creates Christian based stories.
Music is also especially important to Noa. “I have a famous family that has actors and musicians.” Noa plays nine musical instruments. Her two favorites are an acoustic guitar and a ukulele. She writes her own folk and Christian music. Blake Shelton is one of her relatives and she finds inspiration from his music. Another inspiration from her family Noa remembers is her uncle. He used to tell her, “You can be anything, like a president if you want to be.” She uses this advice in her daily life to help her achieve her goals.
Noa had important advice for other self-advocates who want to express themselves to the world in a positive way. “Show that you care to others. If you’re having a bad day, you should still treat others as respectfully as they treat you. Be you and show your uniqueness. Be yourself. Be kind, have loyalty to your friends and family. Be truthful. And care about them.”
