Celebrating Value and Talent: National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM)

Every October, the U.S. Department of Labor celebrates National Disability Employment Awareness Month or NDEAM for short. This year is the 80th anniversary, and the theme is “Celebrating Value and Talent.” It reminds us of the many contributions people with disabilities make to our workplaces and communities.

What is NDEAM?

NDEAM is a nationwide campaign that shines a spotlight on the skills, dedication, and achievements of workers with disabilities. It encourages employers to build inclusive workplaces where everyone has a chance to succeed.

The observance began in 1945, as a weeklong recognition of people with physical disabilities. Over time, it has expanded to include everyone with a disability. In 1988, Congress officially named it National Disability Employment Month, and in 2001 the Office of Disability Employment Policy or ODEP was created to lead the effort.

Why it Matters

People with disabilities bring unique perspectives, talents, and strengths to the workforce. All workplaces should be inclusive and fair because they are stronger and a more innovative place to work. NDEAM is a time to recognize that diversity includes disability, and that everyone deserves the opportunity to find meaningful work.

How to Participate

Whether you’re an employer, educator, community leader, or advocate, there are many ways to get involved:

  • Host a disability awareness event or training session.
  • Share stories of employees with disabilities on social media using the hashtag #NDEAM.
  • Review your hiring practices to ensure they are inclusive.

No action is too small. Even simple steps can help raise awareness and promote inclusion.

Looking Ahead

As we approach America’s 250th anniversary in 2026, this year’s NDEAM also honors the role people with disabilities have played in shaping our nation’s workforce. Let’s continue to build a future where everyone’s value and talent are recognized.
