Ask An Advocate: Medicare Cards

Q: I’m on Medical Assistance and Medicare and received a new Medicare card in the mail recently. I noticed my Medicare number changed and am worried it’s a scam. Is this true?

A: Luckily, it’s not a scam. New cards were sent out to individuals on Medicare starting earlier this year. The cards contain new numbers instead of your Social Security Number for security purposes, and you should shred your old card since it has your Social Security Number on it. Keep this card with you and present it along with your Medicaid card whenever you see your doctor.
