Relationships, Sexuality, and Dating Classes

Becoming Informed

When it comes to talking about relationships and sexuality, people with intellectual and developmental disabilities are often excluded. There are many myths out there including: people with disabilities are not sexual beings, withholding information about sexuality will keep people safe, and people with disabilities are unable to make good decisions about sexuality. In reality, people with disabilities are sexual beings who have a right to receive correct information about relationships and expressing sexuality in safe and healthy ways. We also know that lack of access to accurate information on sexuality puts adults with disabilities at higher risk of sexual assault and other health issues.

The Arc’s Relationships, Sexuality, and Dating classes are curriculum-based classes that offer people with intellectual and developmental disabilities a wide-range of accessible information about healthy relationships and sexuality.

About the curriculum

Designed for and by people with developmental disabilities, these sessions use a groundbreaking and accessible curriculum developed by The Green Mountain Self-Advocates and Planned Parenthood of Northern New England. In the spirit of “nothing about us without us” people with developmental disabilities played an active role in the creation of this curriculum and all sessions are led by a 2-person teaching team which includes a self-advocate with a disability and an Arc Advocate.

In 2017, The Arc GTC will be offering the following classes for Self-Advocates with Disabilities. There is no fee to attend the classes.

Each class is independent of the other classes. Participants may sign up for as many or as few classes as they wish.  To learn more about each class and to register, click on the class title.
