Lutheran Social Services and The Arc Minnesota Master Pooled Trust

The Arc Minnesota is no longer enrolling new Master Pooled Trust clients.

As of January 1, 2022, Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota is now the trustee of the Arc Minnesota Master Pooled Trust.  Any inquiries about the trust, including disbursements and deposits, can now be directed to Nathan Danielson at nathan.danielson@lssmn.org or Emylee Crawford at Emylee.Crawford@lssmn.org

With the retirement of Arc Minnesota’s Master Pooled Trust Manager Steve Egly, Arc transferred the trust management to Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota (LSS). The transition to LSS was approved by the Minnesota’s courts on December 1, 2021. The actual transfer of the Trust management to LSS took place on January 1, 2022.

What remains the same:

  • The name: The Arc Minnesota Master Pooled Trust
  • Fees
  • Your benefits
  • Qualifying expenditures
  • You can still ask for distributions by submitting the necessary documentation

What looks slightly different:

  • You will have a new trustee
  • Procedures for requesting distributions is slightly different
  • When adding money to your account, it will now be through LSS

When Can You Set Up a Master Pooled Trust?

Now — By a parent or other family member who wants to provide funds to benefit their loved one with a disability. It can be funded now or in the future from an insurance policy, an estate, or other sources.

Anytime — When a person with a disability receives a windfall of money, such as a Social Security back payment, an inheritance, or an insurance or court settlement. Putting this money in The Arc Minnesota’s Master Pooled Trust shelters the funds to use later, while not jeopardizing their benefits.

Who Can Participate in a Trust?

To participate, the beneficiary of the trust must have a certified disability of any type and must live in Minnesota. We serve people throughout the state.

Types of Trusts

1st Party Special Needs Trust — Established with the beneficiary’s own funds.  Common sources include inheritance, back payment of benefits, or court settlement.

3rd Party Supplemental Needs Trust — Trust is funded with money other than funds belonging to the beneficiary.  For families looking to plan for the future of a loved one
