Ask An Advocate: GetSet! Online Interest Map Tool

Q: I am a high school special education teacher, and am looking for a way for students to start thinking about the adult world. I don’t think they’ve thought about their goals and dreams for adult life (jobs, housing, etc.). How can I help them plan for their future?

A: Great question! The Arc developed an online tool to support teens and young adults. Based on person-centered principles, it asks questions designed to help them consider adult life, their goals, dreams, strengths, and what skills or supports might be needed. The tool is called GetSet! and thanks to our sponsor, United Healthcare, it is available for free for a limited time.

A guide is available with the tool to facilitate a discussion with students about what they want their future to look like. Sometimes others may think the student is being unrealistic. However, think about the things you have accomplished that people thought you couldn’t! Sometimes, we aren’t able to achieve a dream, however, it still helps uncover what is important to us.

Go to www.arcgetset.org to try the tool out – for yourself or for your students! Call The Arc Minnesota at 952.920.0855 with any questions.
